Lucky to have each other

Making music is a lonely business, so singer, songwriter and musician Ivy Rossiter decided to get some help.

Enter singer and drummer Logan Compain, and the current line-up of Luckless was born.

Luckless, which is based "between Auckland and Lyttelton", will be playing at Space Monster in Wanganui on November 22.

Rossiter has played Wanganui before, but not as part of Luckless, which began as a solo act in 2010.

She describes Luckless' music as "a little bit rock, a little bit indie, a little bit folk".

"We have some songs that are loud and aggressive, but also other stuff that is moody and dark and ethereal. It's not necessarily get-up-and-dance music, it's more close-your-eyes-and-feel-it music," Rossiter said.

It was those loud and aggressive songs that promoted Rossiter to start searching for a collaborator.

"I started writing material that really called for more than one person to perform," she said.

The band's self-titled first album came out in May last year, and Rossiter said the duo was currently working on material for a second album, with the working title of Vindication Blues.

"It's probably going to come out in the middle of next year, but we have to time it carefully because Logan has his university studies to contend with."

The band's current tour, Drums and Dust, began in Christchurch last week. Rossiter described it as a "mini tour", covering seven centres in two weeks.

"When the new album comes out, we'll be touring more extensively then," she said.

Luckless will be supported at the their Wanganui gig by local act Castlecliff Lights.
