"In maths, for example. This is exactly how I want to be involved in education. I want to be right at the centre of learning.''
Mr Lewis admits stepping into an office each day will be a far cry from the chatter of the playground, corridors and classrooms ringing with children's voices.
"It will be very different. There are wonderful kids and staff at Hunterville School but I know it's time to go. And I have been offered an opportunity which is too good to turn down."
Over the years, as well as being a stalwart supporter of all the school's varied sports teams, he has been right behind all the cultural activities - especially the school musicals.
He said earlier that Hunterville School might be miles from Broadway but it has staged some wonderful productions, including Alice in Wonderland with a cast of hundreds and The Wizard of Oz.
Hawkes Bay director Wendy Revell, who directed the sellout The Wizard of Oz, had said the young Hunterville actors were great kids making great effects.
And when it comes to sport these country kids from Hunterville were always in front, said Mr Lewis. "I was always very proud of our sports teams and athletes. They are a remarkable bunch of kids".
Even when he is travelling home from Palmerston North daily at about 5.30pm next year and driving through Hunterville he'll be stopping off at his old school.
"I just know there will be staff still at school so I'll definitely be keeping in touch. Just because I will have left Hunterville School [I won't forget it]. It stays forever in my heart.''
The appointment of the new principal will be announced early next year, he said.
"I know I'm going but I'm really pleased for the school. There will be new ideas and fresh energy generated for sure. What exciting times lie ahead for our school.''
