Cheers rang out throughout Wanganui as Who Shot Thebarman ran into a podium place in yesterday's Melbourne Cup.
The Auckland Cup winner is owned by Wanganui's O'Leary brothers, and did the district proud in the big race.
Hundreds turned out at bars around the city to watch the great race- and there were plenty in the Wanganui East Club cheering on the local hope.
Who Shot Thebarman finished strongly to finish third as Protectionist took out the Cup with Red Cadeaux second.
Margaret Gudsell was one of the many backing the O'Leary horse and cashed in with a place bet. A "huge" supporter of Who Shot Thebarman, she said the family would be celebrating last night.
"They will be absolutely over the moon. Look out Melbourne - that's all I'll say."
Teresa Crowley was one of those who took the opportunity to dress up for the races. She also had hopes on the O'Leary horse and was backing it due to family connections.
The Wanganui East Club had plenty to keep the cup crowd entertained including a best-dressed competition.
