The message was a serious one but Mike King managed to add just the right touch of comic relief to his korero on mental health and well-being when he spoke to Wanganui audiences on Tuesday.

Michele Edwards, who organised King's visit, said his message was well received by students at Cullinane and Wanganui City Colleges as well as four classes from Wanganui Intermediate.

An evening event at Wanganui City College was attended by over 100 people and Ms Edwards said raffle tickets sold at the event raised more than $200 for the Key to Life Trust.

King shared his own story of experiencing depression and his subsequent journey into addiction followed by recovery and how he got through it.

Ms Edwards asked audience members to share their impressions and this is what some of them said ...

Kody - It was lovely. Mike really got his message across well, mainly about how important counsellors are in giving help to solve problems but with a comedy twist. It's cool to korero.

Tyler - Thanks Mike for letting me spend the day with you. I understand more about the damage that can be caused by drugs and alcohol.

Ryley - I acknowledged how Mike King related his story in a funny way as he was a comedian, it took off a lot of the heaviness of the korero he was speaking about.

Khan-lee - I found Mike King's seminar amusing, fascinating and inspiring. It was a great thing to attend as the korero will hopefully help to awhi (embrace) this generation later in life.

Maynard - Mike King was informative and very interesting. He made the students feel comfortable and included in the seriousness of the matter that was being discussed.

Tauariki - I enjoyed Mike King as he has inspired me through his career of being able to preach a strong message in a funny way but also be able to speak true honesty and make students feel like they can relate to the issue safely without feeling like failures.

Alyssa - I thought he was cool, inspirational and quite original. I appreciated that he gave us strategies and ways to help people through their problems in a safe way.

Ashleigh - Mike King was very inspiring. The way he was able to relate his own issues in life that many of us are maybe facing alone, and give us a guiding hand to realise our meaning in life. Him telling us his own stories really captured all of our attention.

Ms Edwards said she wanted to thank Cullinane and City Colleges, Nga Tai O Te Awa, Anndion Lodge, Rutland Arms, Land Meats, Splash Centre, Removing Barriers and Pak'nSave for their support.

King said he enjoyed the visit and would like to visit Wanganui again next year.
