June weather mild and dry

Warm and slightly drier than usual is how the National Institute of Water and Atmopheric Research sums up June in Whanganui.

A number of minor temperature records were broken in Whanganui during June, NIWA meterologist Ben Noll said.

"Whanganui had its warmest June 20 on record with a max temp of 19.3 C, beating the old record of 17.8 C from 2010. It also experienced its warmest June 22 on record with a max temp of 19.1 C, beating the old record of 18.1 C from 1984," Mr Noll said.

"Whanganui had its mildest June 22 overnight on record since the temperature failed to fall below 11.9 C. Whanganui had its mildest June 23 overnight on record when the temperature failed to fall below 11.3 C."

Mr Noll said the mean high temperature for June was 15.3C, which was 1.4C above the average. The mean low temperature for June was 8.0C, or 1.1C above average.

The highest temperature for the month was 19.8C on June 10, and the lowest was 2.0C on June 7.

Whanganui recorded 68mm of rain during June. The normal rainfall for June is 89mm.

"This means that Whanganui had 77 per cent of normal rainfall, below normal rainfall for the month of June," Mr Noll said.

It's a far cry from June 2015, when Whanganui had a total rainfall of 236mm for the month - including nearly 140mm on June 19-20, an event which caused widespread flooding throughout Wanganui, Rangitikei and South Taranaki.
