Insurance specialist staff will be in Raetihi on Tuesday to assist residents with their insurance or compensation claims following the town's contaminated water crisis in October.

This will be the second round of specialist insurance and claim advice that the council has organised for the Raetihi residents who suffered damage or losses as a result of the diesel contamination.

Insurer Aon will speak to those people who have requested support through the Ruapehu District Council (RDC).

RDC chief executive Peter Till said council would contact everyone who has registered to discuss arrangements.

The first round of assistance was focused solely on Raetihi businesses and saw around 20 Raetihi business people comprising hospitality and accommodation providers, trades and professional services people, meet Aon advisors in mid-October.

The RDC is responsible for returning potable water to Raetihi via the reticulated water mains network, which is everything up to the toby - the valve that allows mains water to be closed.

Households are responsible for everything beyond the toby - this includes all residential water pipes, household plumbing and appliances.

If a household's plumbing has been damaged or the householders have suffered other losses, they must first lodge a claim with their own insurer.

The RDC may be able to provide assistance with preparations of insurance claims.

For those residents who do not have insurance, they will need to provide detailed information that outlines any costs incurred or damages.

Residents must first register with council's Seddon St office, call 06 385 4447, or email info@ruapehudcgovt.nz with contact details and "claim assistance"in the subject line.
