Inner city streets feature heavily in Whanganui's worst intersections

Whanganui's worst intersections have been revealed, with Dublin St and Somme Pde the most problematic for drivers.

There were 69 reported crashes at the intersection in the decade between 2008 and 2017 which was 23 more than the second most dangerous, the Glasgow St intersection with Victoria Ave.

The Dublin St/Somme Pde intersection also had the most crashes in 2017, tied with Mosston Rd and Puriri St at six.

Victoria Ave, Glasgow St, Dublin St and Grey St all feature twice in the top six most accident-prone intersections.

The data comes from the NZ Transport Agency's crash analysis system which is loaded by Police so it refers to reported crashes only.

Whanganui District Council senior roading engineer Rui Leitao said analysis showed the greatest risk and severity of crashes on the Dublin St/Somme Pde roundabout was to cyclists.

Council will be looking at improving the link between the Dublin St Bridge and Dublin St in the coming year.

An upgrade of the traffic signals at the city's second worst intersection - Glasgow St and Victoria Ave - will be done the next three years.

Leitao said lowering fatal and serious crashes was the target of central government and council and the statistics had been improving.

"Whanganui District Council's fatal and serious crashes have dropped from around 25 per year in the 1980s and 1990s to the current 10 per year."

Meanwhile, road policing manager, Inspector David White, said drivers needed to look out for each other when it came to intersections.

"Road users need to take greater care at intersections by being patient and checking more than once that it is safe to enter the intersection," he said.

"If you don't, you're risking serious injury or totally avoidable deaths."

The Grey St intersection with London St has had the third most crashes in the last decade (28) followed by Victoria Ave and Dublin St (25), Parsons St and Grey St (23) and Halswell St and Glasgow St (20).

So far this year the Victoria Ave and London St, and Fitzherbert Ave and Totara St intersections lead the crash stats with two at each..
