Incept Marine in Taihape makes and exports inflatable kayaks, rafts and rescue craft all over the world.

Owner John Booth said the company also makes the large rescue boats for United States company Oceanid to be used in emergency rescue services in the United States and Canada.

The company has the patent for the boat used for rescues from floods, and in snow and ice conditions.

"A shame they hadn't ordered more of these boats in Houston but apparently they never thought it would ever would flood like that. They just weren't prepared which was pretty sad when we send these rescue boats all over the rest of the United States.''

Last month the huge floods in the southern US city of Houston forced thousands to flee their homes and overwhelmed rescuers who could not keep up with constant calls for help.

The incessant rain brought by Hurricane Harvey covered much of Houston.

Mr Booth said one of their rescue boat's features was stability.

"The whole load can be moved over to one side and they won't tip over."
Meanwhile last month in Houston during the frantic rescue effort, helicopters had landed near flooded motorways, airboats crisscrossed neighbourhoods and high-water vehicles negotiated water-logged intersections, CNN News said.

The Harris county sheriff's office rescued more than 2,000 people in the greater Houston area using vehicles including motorboats, airboats and humvees on Sunday, a spokesman said.

Among the latest projects are also inflatable docks for oil company Chevron for its tankers and a large, very stable rescue boat that can take a tonne payload, travel at 45km/h and opens out at the front for easy access to water.

"The whole load can be moved over to one side and they won't tip over."

Mr Booth said the company had the patent for the boat used for rescues from floods, and in snow and ice conditions.

Incept Marine does about a third of its work in the Southern Hemisphere and the remainder is Northern orders.

Incept was keeping up with a standing order of 200 inflatable rescue rafts at $4500 each a year for the American Search and Rescue Service.

But moving his manufacturing operation from Hautapu St in Taihape would never be an option,Mr Booth said.

"It's definitely a lifestyle choice."
