'I want to influence people with my music'

Logan Anderson wants to be a professional musician but he's not interested in money or fame.

Instead, the 17-year-old Year 13 student at Cullinane College wants to do good in the world.

"I want to have an influence on people who listen to my music," he said.

The singer, songwriter, guitarist, and Year 13 student at Cullinane College will take part in the Wanganui regional final of the Smokefreerockquest tomorrow. It is his fourth year competing, last year he won the solo/duo section of the Wanganui final.

"I know I'm going to have a lot of competition this year."

Logan was always going to gravitate towards music. His mum says he was born with drumsticks in his hands, and some of his earliest memories are of his older brother practising trombone.

All his family have been involved in music. He began learning guitar at primary school, buying his first "serious" guitar in Year 9. He has a small studio at the back of his family home - with guitars, keyboards, drums and recording equipment - where he records the songs he writes.

He will perform two original compositions at the rockquest.

Logan, who lists his family as his main musical influence, has not yet firmed up his future plans but he is leaning towards moving to Auckland to study at the school of audio engineering.

Smokefreerockquest will be held on May 23, 7pm, at the Royal Wanganui Opera House. Tickets at the door, students $10, adults $15.
