Monday morning was spent visiting Jigsaw Whanganui, and talking with Tim Metcalf about the challenges facing sections of our electorate.
I also had time with Tracy Lynn, who manages Age Concern, in an effort to learn more about the provision of social services into the lower Rangitikei, Marton, Taihape, Raetihi, and Ohakune areas of the electorate.
These agencies, and a number of others provide great services and help in times of difficulty to those who access them. It is important people know what services are available in our communities, as they often make the difference between a tolerable and intolerable life. They are also of great benefit to many of the young people and families.
I also note that two very good reports have been completed by Taihape and Marton Connections steering groups, which addresses the many challenges these communities face accessing services in their own communities.
If the recommendations are able to be implemented, they will contribute greatly to these communities.
Much of the Rangitikei electorate is challenged by distance. We need to find ways of improving our transport options in rural New Zealand. My offices are interested in being involved in any discussion generated in our community about improving the transport options for people to access education, health and social services.
The health sector has made a fair start in this area, but we could link many other services into this if we planned it well.
One last thing: In the past year, the number of patients across New Zealand waiting longer than six months for elective surgery, or a specialist assessment, has been reduced by 85 per cent - from 5700 to 840.
