A dog owner whose border collie was attacked by a "pitbull-like dog" wants its owner to help with the vet bills.

The woman, who does not wish to be named, said a friend was walking her dog along the Whanganui River walkway near the Motor Boat Club in Wanganui East when it was attacked.

"The man had a little black lap dog and a tan puppy as well as the white pitbull. It was on a lead but the man lost his grip and it bolted towards my dog."

She said the man could not get his dog off her border collie and it wasn't till a bystander intervened that the dogs were separated.

"That man flipped it on to its back and bent its leg back so it would release my dog."

She said the dog owner was very apologetic after the incident, but her pet had suffered a hernia and had to have an operation costing $246.

"If he would like to help pay the bill, he can do so at Vets on Carlton."

She suggested it might be better to muzzle his dog when it was out in public.

The woman also wanted to thank the bystander who had come to the rescue. "If he hadn't, I dread to think what may have happened."
