A Hardy Construction-built beach house in Koitiata, at Turakina Beach, has been awarded the best new build under $500,000 at the Master Builders House of the Year awards.

The Koitiata house, owned by Dan and Nic Marsden, was also awarded the Central North Island regional category winner.

Hardy said the project required lots of hard work and concentration between other builds.

“It’s a pretty big achievement for little old Whanganui,” he said.

“The design was perfect, it suited the site and location, and the team pulled together to do a fantastic job.”

Hardy said the home was proof that clients with a limited budget did not need to settle for a “cookie-cutter home”.

“People need to try and understand that if you’ve got your own slice of land and want to build a new home on it, you don’t need to spend high amounts of money to achieve an architecturally designed, well-built home.”

The 151sq m house took six months from start to finish and was largely built by one builder and an apprentice, which turned into a team of four towards the end.

“I’ve got a great team of guys onboard that all have the same admiration and passion for the industry as I do,” Hardy said.

The judges for the awards wrote that the home was crafted for relaxed, contemporary living.

“It maximises light and space through a smart mix of vaulted ceilings, oversize doors and high-spec finishes that punch well above its price point,” it wrote.

Hardy Construction also entered two other homes, based in Putiki and Westmere, which received Silver Awards.

As the current president of Whanganui Master Builders, Hardy said, he was pushing other builders to enter the awards.

“There are a lot of great builders in Whanganui that build some beautiful homes that would be more than capable of taking out awards,” he said.

“Some people don’t want to join in, but it’s nice to go along to an event like that and be judged by your peers and be recognised for the effort and hard work you put in.”

Next year, Hardy will host a “how to succeed” event for Master Builders to find out what entering the awards and having a chance at winning involves.
