Whanganui UCOL hairdressing students are offering some of their services in exchange for a can of food.
Hairdressing and beauty programme co-ordinator Jacqui Broughton came up with the idea earlier this year.
The programme's beauty and hairdressing students work in the UCOL salon on Wednesdays and Fridays. "There are certainservices, such as blow waves and sets, that we offer for free. Instead we're asking clients to bring in a can to pay for those services."
Mrs Broughton said a different charity would be chosen each month. This month the charity is the Whanganui UCOL student food bank. "It's just started, so we haven't collected a lot, but the clients think it's a great idea," Mrs Broughton said.
She said the salon aimed to give the students the experience of working in a real-life situation. As well as practising their beauty or hairdressing skills, they were also taught reception and customer care skills.
