Seven teams from the Wanganui Boys and Girls Gym club competed in the Waikanae Teamgym display competition on Sunday, November 9.
The competition was at a high standard and well attended with clubs from Waikanae, Wanganui, Fielding, Onslow, Rimutaka, Capital and Harbour City.
Teamgym is a gymnastics group performance competition that originated
in Europe. Teams of 6-12 members compete on vault, mini tramp, tumbling and a choreographed floor routine.
Wanganui teams did well with the Army Cadets in sixth place in the junior division, the volcano girls in fourth place with a third on the floor and the eight Mini Mimers in second place with a second on the floor, third on the vault and second on tumbling.
In the intermediate division the Salsa Sisters were fifth equal with a fourth placing on the floor and the Red Sisters were second overall with second on floor, spring and tumble.
In the senior division Organised Chaos was first overall with second on floor and first on spring and tumble.
In the open division, designed for adult gymnasts, Wanganui's Grease Lightning took the top spot ahead of Fielding with a first on spring, tumbling and floor.
There was a 46 year age range in the competition, with the Wanganui competitors ranging from 7 to 53. One of the highlights of the competition was seeing Liz Smith competing as part of the Grease Lightning team along with daughters Amelia and Rose.
All the gymnasts are now training hard for their end-of-year club break up and prizegiving, to be held on December 14, where audience members will be treated to performances from every class at the gym club.
