A excellent turnout of 132 players came to see out the season at the Wanganui Tennis Club with their 2018 Vets Weekend tournaments.

Organised by Margot Walden, the event comprised men's and women's doubles tournaments on Saturday, followed by a hangi dinner that night, then a mixed doubles tournament on Sunday.

Guests came from Auckland, Bay of Plenty, New Plymouth, Wairarapa and Wellington to take part.

Club spokesman John Williams said the tennis play on both days was of a very high standard.

Locals dominated the Men's doubles with Jared Perkins and Shane Stanfield the winners, while the runnersup were clubmate Patrice Mathey and Hasting's Kevin Beattie, who could claim honourary Whanganui status through his daughter Leela Beattie, the WTC coach.

The Women's doubles was won by Rotorua's Leona Kay-Iuiti and Gisborne's Carol Thorpe.
Sunday's mixed doubles were also dominanted by WTC members, as the winners of the main event were Mathey and Karen Cranston.

The plate events were won by the teams of Perkins and Rachel Cronin, Ivan Southon and Kate Matthews, and Mark Wilson with Lower Hutt's Paulina Godfrey.

Over 60 people enjoyed the Saturday night hangi, which was catered by Immense Flava, while Elaine Holden and Samatha Hirst provided the musical entertainment.

Williams said Walden, her husband Brian, and Leela Beattie had to be thanked for their effective organisation, with the assistance of the WTC's recently purchased computer with its tournament software.

Gillian Pickett and her team ran the kitchen, including making popular smoothies from ingredients supplied by Linda and Robert Scott.
