Devon Homes Wanganui Athletic were left to rue a host of missed opportunities in the 2-2 draw against Havelock North in their first home game of the 2014 Lotto Federation League on Saturday.

Team member Troy Smith said chance after chance was saved or put wide during the clash at Wembley Park, but the side had "dominated" for 75 minutes and were "cruising" with a 2-0 lead.

Anthony Bell scored with a clinical header after a ricochet off the post, early in the first half, which helped calm some nerves.

Kyle Graham Luke scored midway through the second half with a well struck volley and Athletic assumed the job was done.

However, a chance to wrap the game up with a penalty kick with 15 minutes to go missed, and then in the next ten minutes Havelock North scored twice to split the competition points.

"Captain Nick Hayward pulled off some great saves throughout the match and Steven Burney also had a very solid game at left back, looking comfortable in and out of possession," said Smith.

This weekend, Athletic are back on the road to to play a young Palmerston North Boys High School team.
