Crews have worked through the night to contain a large vegetation fire near Waiinu Beach in South Taranaki.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was notified of the fire, involving pine trees, about 2.05pm yesterday.

The fire was estimated to cover about one square kilometre.

In an update on Monday night, Fire and Emergency NZ said Waiinu Village residents were advised to stay inside, close all doors and windows and ensure air conditioning systems were turned off due to smoke and ash in area.

“The village is on standby to evacuate because embers and smoke from the fire are being blown towards the community.

“Police are alerting residents and telling them to prepare in case evacuation is required.

“There will be an evacuation point at the Waverley Community Centre. If you have concerns, please contact 069273027.”

Ten urban and rural fire crews responded with fire engines, supported by two helicopters and a tanker along with a Command Unit and Incident Support Vehicle.

Helicopters fighting the blaze ceased operations at sunset last night.

If you are considering having an outdoor fire for any purpose to go to the www.checkitsalright website and make sure that the conditions are suitable before you light the fire and that there are no restrictions in place.

Firefighters are dealing with several vegetation fires across the lower North Island as a result of uncontrolled fires fanned by strong winds.
