Multiple fire crews worked to extinguish a rural shed fire at Papaiti near Whanganui.

Fire and Emergency NZ crews were alerted to the fire on Waireka Rd about 6.09am on Sunday and responded by 6.27am.

Crews from Whanganui, Marton and Manawatū Volunteer brigades attended.

A total of six vehicles responded, including two fire trucks, three water tankers and a support van.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Shannon Lucas said the fire was extinguished just after 2pm.

Lucas said it was hard to estimate how big the fire was because the 10m-by-10m shed that caught fire spread to the surrounding area.

There were no reports of injuries.
