Occcasionally in journalism you encounter stories that take off, they resonate with the readership to the point that they gain a momentum and it seems impossible to sate the thirst from readers for the topic.

These are not always stories about the major issues - often they can be about seemingly trivial matters - but one which we at the Chronicle hope has this level of appeal is our new campaign Keep it Local: Wanganui.

It's not a new idea by any stretch but now more than ever it seems appropriate to consider our role in maintaining Wanganui as a positive, vibrant place to live where there are activities to enjoy, as well as jobs and opportunities for growth.

Following on from last Tuesday's story about Christmas shopping and the suggestion we should first look to what is offered on our doorstep, we have taken that a bit further with Keep it Local: Wanganui.

There are so many different ways we can keep it local, from shopping for goods and services to the events and activities we choose to go to and the clubs and organisations we belong to. All play a part in connecting our community and making it stronger.

But we need your help to make this campaign a success. We need you to share your stories and explain where you shop, and why. Tell us where in town you get exemplary service. Which events and businesses do you know that benefit the local community.

Our stories, starting today, will be branded with a special logo to identify them as part of the campaign.

We have already done this by highlighting firms that opt for local suppliers. There are more so let's give them credit for that.

Any number of events benefit the local community so let's celebrate them and how organisers ensure they turn first to locals for what they need.

We will be contacting local business groups and city and industry leaders as well as extending an invitation to clubs and service groups to be a part of this campaign.

A business does not need to be locally owned to be featured. Supporting businesses that employ local people and helps retain or create jobs still benefits Wanganui.

The more support the better.

As with other such series or campaigns - Young Achievers, Community Heroes, Wanganui and Proud of It, Celebrating Wanganui are some - this will succeed only if you allow it to. So please join with us and Keep It Local: Wanganui.

Feedback:  How refreshing it was to start the day with a phone message of thanks and appreciation and a letter of the same intent. Both were from different people and about quite separate coverage.

People are so quick to criticise so the feedback was welcome and helped reinforce the impact this newspaper can have. Another correspondent apologised in advance for the state of their handwriting, which had been affected by some serious health setbacks.

This person, who I shall not name here in the interests of protecting their privacy, need not fear. The letter was perfectly legible and suitable for print but your consideration of our staff was appreciated. You should feel free to write again any time you feel the urge.
