A private donor has given an oil painting by Ian Evans to the Mayoral Relief Fund.

Mayor Annette Main said the donation and auction of the painting, being run by the Wanganui District Council, is "yet another example of the generosity being shown to our community".

The auction, on TradeMe, is for a painting of the Whanganui River. All proceeds from the sale will go to the fund to assist those worst hit by the June weather event.

The painting is by Melbourne-based artist Ian Evans. Evans was a pilot, formerly based in New Zealand, who would fly to remote parts of New Zealand to paint the scenery. The description on TradeMe said it captures the Whanganui River "in a somewhat more serene mood.

The mayor said the painting is "a stunning depiction of the Whanganui River so is a fitting artwork for this fundraising auction.

"The flooding event in June showed a tremendous depth of kindness amongst those in our community and from people throughout New Zealand and overseas. The generous donation of this painting is another example of people wanting to help in the best ways that they can."

The 525mm wide x 620mm high painting can be seen at trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=968756304
