Electric vehicles leading the charge into Whanganui on New Zealand promotional tour

A convoy of electric vehicles will park up to promote EV technology at the Whanganui Pak'nSave car park on March 24.

Up to 20 electric vehicles will pull in as part of a Leading the Charge EV tour of New Zealand organised by Better NZ Trust.

The Top to Toe road trip started in 2016, but this year, it is more like toe to top as the journey begins in Bluff and ends in Cape Reinga.

Communications manager Shawn Moodie said that coming to Whanganui was a no-brainer.

"It's a beautiful part of the country, we've seen a lot of data from the Ministry of Transport to suggest that there's a bit of an uptake there, so we definitely need to head along."

"Especially with all the charging stations that are planned and have already opened up there," Mr Moodie said.

One such station will be opening at Pak'nSave in April and is one of 30 openings that the EV enthusiasts will attend.

He said that in Whanganui, there would be "plenty of opportunities for the public to get behind the wheel of an EV and give it a test drive".

Mr Moodie said the goal was to show people that in 2018, EVs are capable of making every day journeys, but also road trips as well.

Following the gathering that runs from 12pm to 2.30pm, everyone is invited to attend a screening of Revenge of the Electric Car at Whanganui Regional Museum.

Revenge of the Electric Car is a documentary that follows four entrepreneurs fighting to bring the electric car back to the world market after the global recession in 2008.

Renowned international EV advocate Chelsea Sexton was a consulting producer on the documentary and will host a Q and A session upon its conclusion.

Whanganui Film Society members can attend the screening for free, while public can do so with a donation.

All proceeds will be donated to Whanganui Green Bikes.
