Award winning artist Eddie Low will be playing in Whanganui this week.

Award winning artist Eddie Low will be playing in Whanganui this week.

Kiwi music legend Eddie Low will play at the Castlecliff Club this Friday night supported by fellow country artist Kevin Greaves.

Eddie Low's career began in the early 1960s when he played in showbands, and with the Quintikis toured with the annual Miss New Zealand contest.

Born blind, Low developed his musical talent at the Blind Institute in Auckland before surgery gave him partial vision in his right eye.

Named the "voice in a million" by music promoter Joe Brown, Low headed to Australia with his friend and fellow entertainer John Rowles to seek fame in Sydney Australia in 1964.

After more than 40 years of international touring and recording, Low has returned to New Zealand and settled in Christchurch.

As well as performing covers and tributes to other artists (most notably Roy Orbison), Low has achieved success with his own compositions Where Are You My Love, Sunday Daddy, Songs Of Home, Aroha, Old Cowboy Songs and I Am Me.

Low was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for Services to Music, in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2006 and in 2009 he recieved the New Zealand Country Music Legend Award as well as a Benny Award from The Variety Artists Club of New Zealand Inc.

A recent article in NZ music magazine Audioculture, said Low's voice is "still a gorgeous instrument, resonant and honeyed."

Kevin Greaves has also received a number of awards and was voted Best Live Entertainer by his peers in the NZ Entertainment Industry Awards 2010.

The Friday night show will kick off with a "mixture of great music and hilarious comedy" from Greaves followed by Low singing all his hits, plus other popular songs.

The show will end with both artists strapping on guitars and "having a jam, taking requests from the audience and encouraging them to dance."

Eddie Low with Kevin Greaves, Castlecliff Club, Friday May 26, 7.30pm until11pm.
Open to club members, their guests and affiliated members from other clubs.
