A Raetihi resident who stopped at Raukawa Falls to show her international guests the view was horrified to find the bins overflowing with rubbish.
On Tuesday Anthea Hatfield was travelling to Whanganui on SH4 with friends from Australia.
"We stopped to look at the view at Raukawa Falls. It's sucha beautiful spot, but it was ruined by all the rubbish coming out of the bin at the rest area. It looked like someone had pulled out the lining of their caravan and tried to stuff it in the bin.
"I'm really proud of my country - but I felt like I had to apologise for this," Ms Hatfield said.
She said other bins on the road were also very full.
"It's just too tempting for some people," Ms Hatfield said.
And she has a clear message for those who dump their rubbish in them.
"Either use them for they've been put there for - that's for putting your lunch wrappers in - or get rid of your rubbish when you get to your destination."
