A Wanganui man is in a serious condition after his car hit a lamp post at Kaitoke yesterday morning.

The accident happened near the intersection of SH3 and Conchord Line at 7.30am.

Constable Zak Thornton from Wanganui police said the south-bound car veered off the road and smashed into the post.

Wanganui Hospital spokesperson Jo Priestley said the man did not appear to have sustained any injuries as a result of the crash.

However, he has an underlying medical condition that is believed to have caused the crash.
Ms Priestley said the man was airlifted to Wellington Hospital yesterday afternoon and was in a serious condition.

SH3 was closed for some time and traffic was diverted through Fordell.

Mr Thornton said Powerco contractors were brought in to stabilise the lamp post and restore power to the pole.
