"At first I panicked, but then I thought back to the first aid course and remembered what to do," Jane said.
She asked someone to call an ambulance, moved Lilli to the recovery position so she wouldn't choke and checked that she was breathing.
She asked someone to bring her mother a blanket and someone else to fetch her younger brother, who was waiting for them in the car.
"I kept thinking back to the class and asking myself, 'What do I need to do now?'"
Jane said passers-by and nearby shop staff were very helpful.
By the time the ambulance arrived, Lilli was conscious again and feeling well enough to refuse to go to hospital. However, she went to the doctor the next day and was told the episode was most likely related to stress.
She said she was "very, very proud" of her quick-thinking daughter.
"If she had not been with me, maybe someone would not have known to turn me on my side so I didn't choke."
Both women encouraged everyone to take a first aid course.
"You just never know when you'll have to use it," Jane said.
-Red Cross and St John both offer regular first aid courses in Wanganui.
