The Wanganui High School 1st XI remain a class below their Taranaki counterparts as New Plymouth Boys' High inflicted a massive 242-run hammering in their Gillette Cup playoff at Victoria Park yesterday.
Winning the toss, it appeared NPBHS were on their way to a total well over 350 at onepoint, having reached 213-2 off 34 overs as opener Matthew Boswell stroked the ball to all corners, reaching his century off 118 balls.
After Boswell's strong start, WHS looked as if they might force a momentum swing when Dylan Martin picked up two quick wickets to have the visitors at 81-2. However Liam Muggeridge (84) increased the run rate, smacking several sixes.
WHS had no luck as Andrew Mackintosh took a good catch heading over the boundary, seemingly throwing it up and returning to the field to claim the ball again, but was ruled to have had one foot down over the line so a six was recorded.
The best bowling figures were Martin 2-45 and Mackintosh 2-71, including Boswell's wicket on 106 after he finally skied the ball to fielder Jessica Watkin, but every WHS bowler suffered under the onslaught.
Chasing 334, WHS faded away for 92 in the 31st over. Mackintosh was stumped for 20, still the biggest contribution, with Adam Gill (19) the only other score of any note.
NPBHS leg spinner Viren Manglani, on exchange from Calcutta, took 5-15 to have WHS packing up early.
The Taranaki team now head to the Central Districts regional final in Palmerston North.
