Huntley School have broken the cycle with an 86-run win to claim the Watsons Intermediate T20 2014 Challenge trophy.
The Rangitikei-based school wrested the title off Wanganui Intermediate School which had won the inaugural competition in 2012 and then again last year. Huntley were 142-4 at stumps, while WIS struggledagainst a strong bowling attack to end the match 56-6.
Huntley went into bat first at Victoria Park with openers Sam Sherriff and skipper Kelvin Brown forming a 49-run partnership before Brown was run out for a top score of 52. Sherriff was adjudged lbw on 23, while Levi Woolston chipped in with 34, only just surpassing extras on 30, including 18 wides.
Marshall Severinsen was by far the best of the WIS bowlers giving away just 11 runs from his tightly-bowled four overs.
Despite extras top scoring in the WIS batting innings at 23, which also included 18 wides, they struggled against a strong bowling attack. Conrad Slako was particularly dangerous taking two wickets for just three runs off three overs, while Hadleigh O'Leary and Geordie Ellis took a wicket piece.
The best of the WIS batters was opener Joel Clark not out on 19 from 53 balls.
The telling point in the match was the 11 boundaries Huntley hit compared to none from WIS.
Huntley will now represent Wanganui at the CD Intermediate T20 competitions and the winner of that tournament will head to the nationals in Auckland in mid-December.
