Wanganui High School's girls cricket team came within two balls of qualifying for the national secondary schools Twenty20 finals after a thrilling final against Palmerston North Girls' High at the Central Districts qualifier at Victoria Park on Wednesday.
WHS defeated national champions Havelock North High School in the morning andthen nearly held off PNGHS that afternoon on the back of two outstanding innings from their in-form captain Jessica Watkin.
Watkin finished 101 not out against Havelock from a team total of 135-9.
Her side then restricted their No1 ranked opponents to 99-9, with Watkin taking 3-4 off her four overs.
Emily McGuinness (2-25) and Eilish Graves (2-28) got the other notable bowling figures in the opening encounter.
"It was exciting ... if you're on the other side," said WHS coach Andrew Lock.
"That's the closest we've ever come for nationals, it doesn't come much closer than two balls."
The games finished an extraordinary school cricket year for Watkin, who scored 618 runs in girls matches.
She also scored a century in a T20 match for the WHS First XI, which added to her innings for the Central Districts Hinds and in senior men's club cricket for St Johns Tech meant she would have likely scored over 1000 runs for the season.
