Friends and family demanded answers when the Manawatu man accused of murdering Whitu Hansen made his first appearance in Palmerston North District Court yesterday .

The 56-year-old man, whose name is suppressed, was arrested and charged on Tuesday for the murder of Mr Hansen.

The Wanganui man went missing on November 24 last year and the investigation was upgraded to a homicide inquiry in December. His body has not been found.

In the dock yesterday, the accused was impassive.

Friends and family of Mr Hansen crowded the gallery, some crying. Yelling erupted as the defendant was led away. Judge Barbara Morris remanded him without plea to June 3 for callover in Wellington High Court.
