A group of 24 Wanganui Collegiate students were the latest to embark on the school's annual five-day traverse from Tongariro National Park to the Whanganui River mouth at Castlecliff last week.

The Year 12 students completed the Source to Sea expedition on April 16.

It starts with a 1am night navigation exercise, tramping 8km from the Mangatapopo campsite on the slopes of Mt Tongariro through to a rendezvous point at the start of the 42 Traverse.

They then mountain-biked the traverse to Owhango, followed by a further 45km to Whakahoro.

After the overnight camp, the students canoed down the Whanganui River, before getting their bikes at Pipiriki.

From there it was a 42km bike ride for another camp, followed by the last 45km leg to Morgan St Beach at Castlecliff.
