Alun Bollinger is now directing the shooting of the "River Queen" film, which is set in the Wanganui hinterland during the New Zealand Wars.
Mr Bollinger was formerly the film's director of photography.
He is one of New Zealand's leading cinematographers and has worked on an impressive list of well-known films. Among
them are "Perfect Strangers", "Heavenly Creatures", "Goodbye Pork Pie", "The Fellowship of the Ring", "Mr Wrong", "War Stories", "Bread and Roses", "The Frighteners" and "The Piano". Publicist Sue May said "River Queen" filming was on schedule to finish at the end of November.
She did not say where shooting would be taking place, nor why the decision was made by Film Finances Ltd and the producers to "release" former director Vincent Ward. That decision was difficult, but necessary, she said.
Ms May thanked the film's cast for their patience and professionalism during a difficult time.
She said the production had the continued support of its New Zealand crew and investors.
"We look forward to the completion of a magnificent film starring Samantha Morton, Kiefer Sutherland, Cliff Curtis, Stephen Rea and Temuera Morrison."
