Cathy Verry cleans up at annual garden awards

Cathy Verry's Springvale garden has been named the best of the best in the annual River City Garden Awards.

Mrs Verry's green-fingered work also earned her a gold award for the best garden frontage in Wanganui, and she also collected a gold award for having the best garden in her suburb.

In the commercial section, Jane Winstone Village on St John's Hill won a gold award with Summerset Village in Wanganui East picking up a silver.

In the junior section, both St John's Hill School and Wanganui East School's "Green Team" won gold awards while Gonville Kindergarten's "Gonville Greenies" won a gold as well.

Presentations were made at a special function at the Wanganui Racecourse.

Most improved garden, Kevin Burke (Aramoho).

Best new garden, Bill and Pauline Ray (St John's Hill).

Most colourful garden, Sandra and Pat Carrick (Wanganui East).

Best garden frontage, Cathy Verry (Springvale).

Best large garden, Colleen and Peter McGonigle (Gonville).

Best small garden, Alf Gates (Castlecliff).

Best vegetable garden, John Baxter (Gonville).

Runner-up best garden overall, Mr and Mrs McGonigle.

Best garden, Mrs Verry.

Suburban awards

Gonville: John Baxter (gold), Peter and Colleen McGonigle (gold).

Aramoho: Mrs K M Elliott (silver), Kevin Burke (silver), Beverley Burgess (bronze), Wanganui Blind Centre (merit).
