A man was taken to Whanganui Hospital in a critical condition after a single vehicle crash at the intersection of Anzac Parade and Rangitikei St about 8am on Wednesday.
The vehicle hit a power pole and came to a stop across the footpath.
A police spokesperson said there was some clean-up required of debris on the road and inquiries will continue into the circumstances of the crash.
Colleen Davis, who lives on the corner of Anzac Parade and Rangitikei St, said she was still in bed when the accident happened.
"We just heard the squeal of brakes and a crash.
