The people who run low-powered radio stations aren't necessarily keen on publicity.

Following the story about Steve Brother-Majik's Wild Card Radio, only one other broadcaster has made himself known to the Chronicle.

Chris, who would not give his surname, has had City Magic broadcasting day and night on 106.9 FM since 2012.

The man known as Frog, Craig "Frog" Falconer, dropped off a card for his station but only after being prompted. It is Shock FM, with the catch phrase "Tune in if you have the balls".

Chris said the station broadcasts from Durie Hill and the signal spreads across the central city.

He has a playlist of 10,000 songs "catering for the older population". They are chosen randomly by his computer. He said he also airs documentaries and radio series such as The Goon Show, Dr Who and Dad's Army, and segments on Eric Clapton's life and times. He has about 8000 compact discs, buys more second hand and downloads songs from them on to his computer.

He doesn't speak on air himself, despite having done stints as an announcer for two Wanganui radio stations and one in Palmerston North. And he doesn't air advertisements.

His equipment cost about $2000 - a mixer, a transmitter, an aerial and computer software.

He pays $200 a year in royalties and broadcasts at 1W, the legal limit for a low-powered station.

Chris said he liked music, and broadcasting was his hobby. He agrees with Mr Brother-Majik, that once you have started it's hard to stop.

"It's like a pet. You can never give it up."

He has thoughts to set up the station for announcing, and may speak on air. He is also wondering about getting people to give talks - about gardening and other subjects.

Anyone with content they would like to broadcast can ring him on 022 076 3648.
