Building in focus

Public submissions on an application for resource consent to demolish Whanganui's heritage Thain's building will be heard on August 9-10.

More than 30 submissions have been made to Whanganui District Council about the application by the owners of the building at 1 Victoria Ave. Nearly all submitters oppose the application.

Trio blitz contest

The Millennium Trio won the Whanganui district round of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest on Friday.

The group, comprising Angela Wu playing the flute, Earth Sunthornyanakit on cello and pianist Emily Kim performed Promat Chorus Hodie by David Hamilton.

The win qualifies the Wanganui Collegiate School trio for Regional Finals in Napier. Adjudicator Anthony Ferner said they gave "an absolutely spectacular, stunning and cohesive performance".

Dahlia interest

Grower Diana Loader wants to start a Whanganui group for dahlia growers. Anyone interested in the idea is invited to meet on Friday. The get-together is at noon at the Quaker meeting house, 256 Wicksteed St.

Emergency flight

A seriously ill 85-year-old woman was airlifted from Taihape to Whanganui Hospital on Sunday, June 10. The woman was taken to the Taihape airfield by ambulance then flown to Whanganui.
