CHRISTMAS Day ended in tragedy for one family in Wanganui yesterday when a 15-year-old boy was killed in a smash on Taupo Quay.
The crash occurred just before 6pm on Taupo Quay near Swartz Tyres.
Witnesses said the vehicle was travelling westward when it left the road and crashed.
Cemetery
Circuit set up crew members, called emergency services and rushed to the aid of the three occupants but were unable to help the boy who died at the scene.
The other two occupants were taken to Wanganui Hospital. Police closed the section of Taupo Quay from its intersection with Heads Rd to the Taupo Quay/Liffiton St intersection.
The serious crash unit was called in from Palmerston North to examine the scene.
Their work was completed last night, allowing the section of Taupo Quay to be re-opened for today's Cemetery Circuit race.
Police said no other vehicle was involved in the crash and are appealing for witnesses who they haven't already spoken with.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Andy Reid at Wanganui police on 349 0600.
