Blues singer brings energy to the stage

Laura Collins and the Back Door Blues Bands are coming to Whanganui this weekend.

The Whanganui Jazz Club welcomes back sassy songstress Laura Collins and her Back Porch Blues Band to their monthly show at the RSA on October 2.

The group is touring New Zealand, celebrating the recent release of their Live at VK's album.

Ms Collins is known for her wonderfully energetic and entertaining style.

"Blues comes straight from the heart and that's just how I like it. It's accessible, joyful, heart-felt music ... [it's about] the enormous fun and energy we have when we're playing," she said.

Her current band features well-established players on the Wellington and national music scenes.

Wayne Mason, legendary Kiwi singer songwriter, is also a fine boogie piano player. He played at the jazz club earlier this year backing Andrew London. Guitarist John O'Connor has played with the likes of Kiri Te Kanawa, Mark Williams and BB King. George Barris on upright bass is joined by Pete Cogswell on the back porch' drums.

"Having a pulled back rhythm section just allows us to be lower volume and bring a really warm, vocal-led sound," Ms Collins said.

Laura Collins and the Back Door Blues Band play at the Wanganui RSA on October 2. Doors open at 5:30, with the band playing 6:30 - 8:30. Members pay $10 and non-members $20. Memberships are available at the door.

The jazz club is holding a special concert on October 15 at 5.30pm. It's an evening of "soul jazz" with Michel Benebig on Hammond organ with American guitar sensation Carl Lockett.
