EAST met west when pipes and drums from New Zealand and Australia came together on the Whanganui River last night.
The Pipes and Drums 5 Wellington West Coast and Taranaki Battalion Group (5WWCT BN GP) are hosts to the Eastern Goldfields Highland Pipe (EGHP) from Kalgoorlie Western Australia.
Last night the combined
bands played on a two-hour trip on the Waimarie against a golden dusk and a first-quarter moon on a trip the Australian band manager Mike Vestey said was "awesome".
After the New Zealand Army Band played last year in his home town of Kalgoorlie on Anzac Day, pipe major Willie Corcoran decided the EGHP would reciprocate.
The Australian band arrived on Thursday and will play with the 5WWCT BN GP in Wellington, Waiouru, Wanganui and New Plymouth.
The two bands will join with the Wanganui Pipe Band for the Anzac dawn service, then perform at a concert in the Army Hall in Maria Pl. At 1pm the combined bands will put on a one-hour performance at the Wanganui RSA.
