If Whanganui is to compete to be the country's most beautiful city, mindless vandalism of street trees is not going to help, an Aramoho resident says.

Flowering cherry trees were knocked over in Aramoho's Cumbrae Pl over the weekened in what a nearby resident says looks intentional.

"Obviously by a car because there are tyre marks on the berm. It's not the first time it's happened," the resident who wished not to be named said.

"It's not like an accident, it looks like it's deliberate."

The three trees have been snapped near the base and have marking on their bark where it looks like they've been hit with a car.

He said with Whanganui district councillors last week calling for Whanganui to enter the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards - this wouldn't help.

But he hoped it would alert people to be watchful for similar behaviour.

"We want to get people looking after their gardens and berms. It's not a good look, apart from being mindless vandalism, of course."
