A young Whanganui barber has been named national apprentice of the year for his high standard of work and attention to detail.

Sam Monaghan, 20, works at Barber Town in Victoria Ave and credits his boss Matt Gilmore and training provider Varda Academy in Hamilton for excellent training.

The former Cullinane College student said he discovered his talent for the profession while trimming his brothers' hair.

"We bought a set of clippers and would just give each other number four haircuts at first but then they started asking me to do something different.

"I started getting creative with the clippers and found that I really enjoyed it."

Mr Gilmore has been Sam's number one trainer and he has completed block courses with Varda Academy where he caught the tutors' attention and was recommended for the award. "He is self-motivated and great with clients," said Varda manager Cara Healy.

"He is passionate about barbering and not afraid to demonstrate his barbering skills to the class."

Ms Healy said Sam was also a great team player and always willing to help others.

Sam is now inspiring this year's apprentice Jordan Paranihi who started work at Barber Town almost three months ago.

"I enjoy watching him work," said Jordan.

Barber Town would meet the approval of New Zealand First leader Winston Peters who was in Whanganui last week encouraging Gold Card holders to ask local businesses for discounts.

Sam and Jordan said Gold Card holders can receive hair cuts at discounted rates before 2pm from Monday to Friday.
