Hive Co co-working business space had its official opening.

Whanganui business Hive & Co opened an office space with a difference on Friday night.

Owner Andrew Tripe has converted part of the former National Bank building into a co-working and collaboration space for businesses.

"We now have a space which connects people and organisations with each other in a better way," Mr Tripe says.

"It's where new ideas and innovation projects are sparked. Start-ups and scale-up businesses can go to the next level. Where members can solve each others problems and/or identify opportunities. Basically a space where goodness is made."

Mr Tripe bought the former National Bank building in Whanganui's Victoria Ave last year. The lower storey is now leased to Frank Bar + Eatery and the upper storey is dedicated to the co-working and collaboration space - a boardroom and two offices.

Hive & Co supply business basics like a printer, power and ultrafast broadband.

The premises were opened by Whanganui Mayor Hamish McDouall while guests had a chance to mix and mingle over drinks and nibbles.

One person who works for an out-of-town business is already using the space but Mr Tripe there was room for more. He said the co-working concept is about bringing people together to collaborate on projects and solve business problems together.

"It could bring new people together, extend client networks, and give people work colleagues and the buzz of membership."

Having such a group of people coming and going from one of the city's most impressive buildings will add vibrancy and diversity to the city centre, he said.
