ANTI-ABORTION protestors will target the doctor they believe is an abortionist and are promising further high profile action. The promise comes from the spokeswoman of an anti-abortion group which was protesting outside Wanganui Hospital on Saturday afternoon. The spokeswoman, Karen, didn't give her last name but promised the picketing was only thestart of their campaign. "This is just the start. There are plenty of targets?we know who the abortionist is," Karen said. Health board members are also in protestors sights and further protests would be high-profile. "I'm not going to say what we have planned, that will spoil the surprise." When told the action sounded ominous Karen said she hoped it sounded that way. She wouldn't elaborate what protest was planned for the abortionist or how they knew who it was. "It's nothing criminal but he'll find out." Karen said the group had tried to discuss the issue with the health board but they weren't interested. "We were silenced by the chairman. We can bring it up at meetings, but they don't like what we're saying." Karen had spoken to the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child who told her a planned abortion clinic in Palmerston North ten years ago was axed because of protests. She suggested a pro-life rally in Wanganui but was told people had changed and had no motivation. She said she had been fighting abortion all her life and everyone was passing the blame for the abortion service returning to Wanganui. "The health board can stop it, that's why we have one. I hope they will wake up. It's just catering for a minority. "The support we've had from the public is fantastic. They don't want it and for every negative reaction we get 25 positive ones." Karen said it didn't make sense that maternity services in Wanganui were being cut, yet abortions were back. "For an elective C-sections you'll have to travel to Palmerston North. It's easier for a pregnant girl to go to Wellington than it is for someone nine months pregnant to go to Palmerston North." About 30 protestors held signs saying "Abortion Kills Children" along Heads Rd and Karen said it was well planned. "We don't want the police against us. We tell everyone not to yell things and not to block the footpath." She said the protestors weren't from any particular group but the Chronicle understands many of them were from St Anthony's Church. A Wanganui police spokesman said police hadn't been aware of the protests and there hadn't been any complaints.
