Murray Hughes likes to ride his bicycle, he likes to ride his bike.
But sometimes he lets the engine do the work instead, because his two-wheeled machine is no ordinary bike.
Not many have an engine, clutch and ignition for starters. Now, the former district councillor wants the motorised bike to take
off in Zealand.
He has already imported two from China, with more on the way.
"When I didn't get back into council last year, I started to think about what I was going to do instead.
"I didn't want to go back to the travel industry, so I thought back to my school days and I remembered these bikes that had motors and pedals."
After bringing over two samples, he's almost ready to start selling them himself.
Each bike will likely cost between $650 and $700, and there are savings to be made elsewhere.
"The tank holds two litres and it can do 100 kilometres on one and a-half litres, and if you pedal too you can go for a lot more."
The bikes, which have a top speed of about 40kmh, need to be registered but get by without a warrant.
Riders have to wear a helmet and hold a driver's licence.
"It's good for keeping fit but not wearing the body out." With petrol prices on the rise, his business could have mileage.
