Wanganui High School students are preparing to shine tomorrow night at the Royal Wanganui Opera House.

They'll dance, sing their socks off and show Wanganui what they're made of.

A feature will be the dance piece they're taking to the regional Stage Challenge competition in Palmerston North next week. The theme is New Zealand's worst fire, the 1947 Christchurch Ballantynes department store fire, when 41 people died.

The school's 47-strong choir, off to the Australasian Music Festival, will perform their Broadway-inspired love story. To help fund the Australian trip, students, teachers, parents and local artists have painted their impressions of the opera house. The 56 paintings will be shown on screen and bids taken during tomorrow's show.

Performing arts co-ordinator Jeanette Jones hoped paintings by Wanganui artists Sue Cooke and Marty Vreede would fetch good prices.
