Lake Street Dive

Lake Street Dive

Remember that viral YouTube video a few years ago of a group performing an acoustic version of the Jackson 5's I Want You Back on a suburban street corner?

That group was Lake Street Dive and this month they'll release their debut album Side Pony.

The quartet visited these shores last year with shows at Womad and the Auckland Arts Festival.

Fans can get a taste of the new album with the smile-enducing track Call Off Your Dogs, which harks back to 60s pop and soul.

Side Pony is released on February 19.

With two New Zealand shows lined up this month, American indie rockers Death Cab for Cutie have released a third single from their eighth studio album Kintsugi.

Good Help (Is So Hard To Find) follows Black Sun and The Ghosts of Beverly Drive released last year.

The upbeat, percussion-heavy number is sure to feature on the setlists at the shows at Wellington Opera House on February 20 and Auckland's St James on the 23rd.

But to see another side of the band, check out the full 8:31 video for dark 2008 track I Will Possess Your Heart - it will blow you away.

New Phil Collins retrospective Take A Look At Me Now will see his eight solo albums issued as extended and remastered editions.

First off the rank are 1981's Face Value (featuring tracks including In The Air Tonight and I Missed Again) and 1993's Both Sides (Both Sides of the Story and Everyday).

The extended versions include demos and b-sides with a variety of formats available.

Revisit a classic

With the release last week of their seventh studio album Lost Property, it's timely to remember Turin Brakes' 2003 second release Ether Song.

Moving away slightly from the folk rock of their debut, the duo produced an "all killer, no filler" record with a dozen release-worthy songs and one of the album's best tracks, the eponymous track 13, hidden at the end.

Best known was the single Pain Killer (Summer Rain) which charted in the UK top 5. For a treat seek out The Bees' remix of the track Long Distance.
