James Vincent McMorrow's follow-up to Early In The Morning leads from the front. Its opening track Cavalier is a masterpiece - the Irishman's vulnerable, fragile falsetto perfectly suited to the repeated lyrics "I remember my first love". It contrasts with the rich brass accompaniment that is lovely here but trulygrand on the album's other standout track Gold.
McMorrow has been compared to Frank Ocean (especially on Cavalier), James Blake and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. But comparisons can only distract from what is a powerful, affecting album.
Haunting, soulful vocals, moving lyrics, understated percussion and bold brass combine for a beautiful experience.
On album closer Outside, Digging the music becomes so exquisitely hushed you'll find yourself leaning forward to listen in, before the track builds with crashing cymbals and emotional vocals to its, and the album's, climax.
