Light and colour are vital to our very existence

My work primarily involves light, colour, texture and style to create harmony within the home or workplace.

Without light, we have no colour or texture; without colour or texture, we have no emotion; and without style, we have no lifestyle to recharge and live life to the full.

I always try to take a holistic approach because our homes and workplaces need to reflect who we are - not the friends we have around for coffee once a week or the glossy magazine sitting on the coffee table. Our interiors and exteriors need to have a "feel-good" feeling for when you come home at night after a hard day at work or arriving at work in the morning.

That feeling should start from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed. The comfort of your bed is important as is whether you managed to get a good night's sleep; the layout of your wardrobe is important and whether you can easily find what you need.

Light is such an important element within our interiors and exteriors. We need it for safety, mood or atmosphere and tasks whatever they may be. If light is wrong - too low or too bright or the wrong colour - it affects every aspect of our well-being.

When I talk about colour, it is in every aspect of my work. Colour is everywhere - in the subtle colour of natural stone that you may use as a feature on your exterior, the depth of colour in a plush cut pile carpet, the splash back in the kitchen or colours in a picture that pop on an exciting wall colour.

When I talk about white or black it is just that - white and black with no colour, no tint to the mix to give an underlying hint of colour. I love pure white and the way it plays with light.

Texture and pattern also create emotive responses - it is like the difference of picking up a cuddly teddy bear that just moulds in against your body to the one that is staunch and proud and made from a hard woollen fabric.

The emotional responses are no different in our homes - some of us will feel comfortable with a more minimalist look, crisp lines, sharp edges and minimal colour. But in order for it to work there still needs to be texture and pattern with that style and colour combination.

Colour, texture and pattern - you need all three.
