Game review: Kick Ass 2

It's no secret that games based on movies are usually rushed, incomplete, bug-ridden efforts thrown together in a short time to coincide with the launch of the movie. They're a synonym for everything that is wrong with the gaming industry today.

So you would think that a movie tie-in released over nine months after its theatrical sibling has had some extra care and effort put in to make it worthwhile.

In the case of Kick Ass, the complete opposite applies. I believe that six months after the movie release they suddenly realised that they hadn't made an accompanying game, so bundled some abomination of a fighting game together in a few weeks.

In 19 years of game reviewing, Kick Ass 2 is easily the worst two hours I have spent playing a game. Had I known that I'd be doing exactly the same thing - using the same moves against the same enemies at the end of the game as I did at the beginning - then I could have written this review after 10 minutes of gameplay. There are two attacks in Kick Ass 2 - kick and weapon hit - which means stringing together combos is unfulfilling. There are finishing moves, which look nice, but soon serve only to prolong the pain.

The graphics are so-so, the voice acting is terrible, there is no progression system to level up your character, the camera is irritating and you can't even play as Hit Girl. The strangest irony in this so-called "fighting game" is that you can pretty much run past every enemy except the bosses and barely have to throw a punch.
