DVD review: Cuckoo (M)

The cast of Cuckoo

He's every father's worst nightmare - the hippie, new-age man your daughter brings home from her overseas travels.

That is what faces Ken Thompson (Greg Davies) when Rachel (Tamla Kari) returns from her gap year in Thailand.

His name is Cuckoo (Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg) and the name is quite apt.

Cuckoo has been on the road for many years "finding himself" with stints in Buddhist monasteries and other religious retreats along the way.

He feels he has been put on Earth to be a healer and to help his fellow man.

But his positive charms won over Rachel and they married on a beach in Thailand.

Now back in England with little money or prOpects, the newlyweds move into the family home and Ken and Lorna (Helen Baxendale) have to integrate him into the family.

Over five episodes Cuckoo manages to get all sorts of people into trouble with his New Age ways and even manages to get Ken high on "acid".

They all find it is difficult to remain angry at Cuckoo too long as he is so overwhelmingly positive about life and people.

I was a little sceptical going into Cuckoo's adventures.

I feared he might be a little too weird but the end result is a lot of laughs and some excellent entertainment.Craig Nicholson
