It is a difficult assignment to put together a murder-mystery spanning eight episodes that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The people behind this BBC series have achieved just this in a miniseries that leaves you guessing until the final episode.
When 11-year-old Danny Latimer is found deadon the beach of this sleepy coastal community, fear and emotion grips the residents. Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) knows her community intimately and expects to lead the investigation, only to find Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (David Tennant) has been brought in from outside.
The investigation uncovers secrets long hidden among the residents. Rumours and finger-pointing and the presence of national media bring deadly implications for suspects. The suspects come thick and fast, everyone seems to have a secret, and no one seems to be telling the whole truth.
What should be a simple investigation gets complicated very quickly. At no point in the first seven episodes is it possible to confidently pinpoint the killer. Many look likely, no one is obvious.
The final unveiling of the killer is both staggering and yet somewhat logical. Broadchurch was a hit both in Britain and here -- for very good reason.
